The standing ovation

Asa Winikur '24 - Pierce Laveran '24

Hello Fords,

During my years at Haverford, students have debated standing ovations in Centennial Hall. As we get into the season of Reflections, I would like to shed light on the importance of supporting our brothers. In my opinion, the value of giving a standing ovation after a Reflection is not to signify that a student has just given the greatest speech of all time, but to show gratitude to the courageous act that just happened.

If a student goes on stage and takes a moment to be truly vulnerable, they deserve a standing ovation.

It is not easy to present something meaningful about who you are as a person.

I am not saying every Reflection requires a standing ovation, but consider what it takes to get up on stage and open up. It is not easy to present something meaningful about who you are as a person.

I wish the best for everyone giving a Reflection this school year and, as always, Godspeed.
