Step into Nanu’s Hot Chicken, and you’re immediately hit with an urban vibe, with graffiti-covered walls and bold, animated signage. It sits next to the Señorita’s at the corner of Lancaster and Ardmore Avenues, bringing a refreshing taste to the Ardmore West Shopping Center rather than the usual Chipotle or McDonald’s.
Inside, the space is compact yet inviting, including three small tables and a high-stool counter. Diners can place their orders either at the counter or via an online kiosk mounted against the wall, streamlining the process. The menu is straightforward yet satisfying, featuring hefty portions of chicken tenders, sandwiches, fries, and more. Prices on meals range from $10 to $25, depending on the portion size. You can also add small sides to complete your order. Drinks consist of soft sodas, bottled ($2.50) or canned ($1.50), and smoothies priced at $7.
The real star, of course, is the chicken. After selecting your meal, you choose your preferred spice level, ranging from no spice to the hottest choice: reaper. Within ten to fifteen minutes, your meal arrives in a simple plastic container. But don’t be fooled by the packaging. The elements inside are anything but simple. The chicken pieces are impressively large, roughly six inches long, and exploding with flavor. Even without sauce, the chicken is still well-seasoned and flavorful. The spice produces a satisfying ratio of heat to flavor, allowing you to enjoy both aspects thoroughly. The chicken sandwich is similar, though it can be quite messy.
As for the sides, the fries are comparable to a crispier, less seasoned version of Chickie’s & Pete’s Crabfries. The waffles served with various meals definitely exceeded expectations, but the smoothies fell short. They taste watered down and underwhelming compared to the rest of the food.
Is it messy? Yes. But is it worth it? Absolutely. Nanu’s is a must-visit for anyone craving big flavors in a casual, quick manner. Perfectly positioned near Haverford, it’s an ideal spot for a swift, satisfying bite close to campus.
If you’re in the mood for spice or just good chicken, Nanu’s Hot Chicken is the place to go.
