In recent months, our country’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has caused significant controversy. Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, and some believe it is still unclear if Good was simply following the agent’s orders or if she was driving her car towards the agent. Alex Pretti was killed in a similar manner, and some believe it is unclear whether or not he was wielding a weapon when he was shot by ICE.
Left-leaning media is portraying ICE and President Trump as the next fascist dictatorship, while right-leaning media is portraying seemingly harmless American citizens as evil and dangerous. Simply put, it is impossible to get the facts. One media group might tell us one thing happened, and another media group might tell us something else completely different happened. Although extremely frustrating, there is little we can do.
We must listen to each other with respect and build off each other’s ideas if we want to have positive discussions regarding these recent events.
The Index offers a simple message: practice unity. Due to the nature of partisan media, it is impossible to get the facts completely straight. We don’t know if ICE agents were just practicing self-defense in the murders of Good and Pretti, so it is impossible to form a fact-based opinion. We must listen to each other with respect and build off each other’s ideas if we want to have positive discussions regarding these recent events.
Don’t mindlessly vilify ICE. Don’t mindlessly praise ICE. Instead, listen to people who have different opinions and be truly open to changing your perspective based on what you learn.
