Fords Football morale is “higher than ever” after two huge wins ahead of Inter-Ac season

Owen Bernard ’27, Mick Slachtna ’29, and Logan Evans ’27 celebrate after a touchdown against Calvert Hall in a 31-20 win – Jesse Kanefsky ’29

The Fords football team experienced a rocky start to the 2026 season with three consecutive two-score losses to the McDonogh School, Salesianum, and Bonner.

But the Fords were far from finished.

Since then, the Fords have flipped the script, securing two massive wins.

“Morale was higher than ever.”

Gunnar Hermansen ’28

First, they pulled off an unexpected win over the sixth-best team in Maryland, Calvert Hall, at home on September 26th.

Calvert Hall was projected to have a 90% chance of beating the Fords.

Instead, the Fords bulldozed their way through the Cardinals in their home opener, cruising to a 31–20 victory behind a three-touchdown performance from star running back and Fourth Former Mick Slachta.

“Morale was higher than ever,” Fifth Form quarterback Gunnar Hermansen said.

The Fords then had a tough road matchup against the Georgetown Prep Little Hoyas. Still, the Fords came into the game with their heads held high.

Hermansen believed that the game with Georgetown Prep would swing in Haverford’s favor. This confidence helped lead him and his team to a dominant win against the Little Hoyas, securing a victory 42-7.

“I have never been more sure of something in my life,” Hermansen said.

The star of the show was, without a doubt, the Fords’ unrelenting defense, which prevented the Hoyas from scoring, aside from a late touchdown deep in the fourth quarter.

The offense also found success, scoring the most points of the season so far, helped by key contributions from their running back, Third Former Bryce Byrd.

Next week, the Fords travel to Penn Charter for the Inter-Ac season opener.
