Third Formers join student council

With the start of every school year, Third Formers face the same question: who is going to represent their form in the upper school’s student council?

While candidates usually give their speeches in front of the student body, that is no longer possible, considering the school’s COVID-19 protocols. With help from Third Form Dean Mr. Steve Cloran, twelve candidates aiming for the role of Third Form President filmed their speeches remotely.

In the subsequent elections, students voted for their top-five choices using rank-choice voting, a system that helps make sure the candidates the student body most prefers are elected.

In a tight election, Asa Winikur, Fred Jordan, and Christopher Schwarting became the president and two representatives, respectively. As Winikur took office, he affirmed that the coronavirus would not hold him back from planning fun events for the Third Form.

“This year, more than ever, our emphasis is on what we can do to make up for what we are missing out on.”

“This year, more than ever, our emphasis is on what we can do to make up for what we are missing out on,” Winikur said.

Representative Christopher Schwarting is also confident in the representatives’ ability to plan events to create a fun Third Form year, despite the troubling times.

“We’ve been working alongside the Student Council to arrange speaker series with alumni who have gone on from Haverford to exceed in college and beyond, and we’re really excited about things in the future.”
