American rapper Nathan Feuerstein, or NF, is a criminally underappreciated artist. His style and fast flow mirrors his greatest influence and rapping icon, Eminem. NF is much different than most modern rappers, as he raps about real-world problems, and problems that he deals with in his life, which leads to an emotional connection through his songs.
NF released his song “When I Grow Up” in 2019 as the third single from his fourth studio album, The Search.
The song presents the perspective of a younger NF. It recounts his humble beginnings and desire to make it big. Where most modern rappers rap about nonsense and display their wealth and fortune through their lyrics, NF focuses on meaningful lyrics and simplicity.
“When I Grow Up” starts with a simple beat that remains the same throughout the whole song. The simplicity of the beat enhances and intensifies the lyrics, which is what NF wants to be the focal point of the song.
As the song progresses, NF begins to intensify the speed and volume of the song, and at the end he is almost yelling the chorus at the listeners.
“I think sometimes maybe I am the underdog, or just an overlooked artist, and I’m fine with that. At this point I’m in a place where I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing.”

NF’s lyrical ingenuity is displayed through his ambitious childhood dreams. The chorus is, “When I grow up, I just want to pay my bills / Rappin’ about the way I feel (Oh, yeah) / I just want to make a couple mil’ / Leave it to the fam in the will (Oh, yeah) / I just want to sign a record deal / Maybe buy a house up in the hills (Oh, yeah) / Might not be the best in my field / But I guarantee that I’ma die real/ When I grow up” NF’s message is simple; to become a famous rapper and support his family. He inspires listeners to chase their dreams no matter their situation.
In the chorus, he also mentions that he understands that he’s not the greatest rapper, but he is never going to change who he is. NF is satisfied with his style of rap, and is pleased to pleasure his friends. In a 2019 interview with NME, or New Musical Express, a British music, film, and culture website, NF said, “I think sometimes maybe I am the underdog, or just an overlooked artist, and I’m fine with that. At this point I’m in a place where I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing.” Evidently, NF’s style caters to fans of significant lyrics and masterful flow.
NF’s “When I Grow Up” is relevant in today’s society. It inspires others to continue chasing their dreams regardless of their living situation, class, or wealth. In the United States a huge disparity between the rich and poor exists, but there are opportunities for the poor to become rich if they never give up, as NF did.
NF uses his music as a way to vent his frustrations and tell his life story. His songs speak volumes to the misunderstood children and teenagers who are convinced no one is listening.
