Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is making a splash in theaters all across the world. Marvel fans will remember the film as one of the greats, and its debut is only just getting started. Premiering September 3, Shang-Chi is a must-see for everyone.
The film takes place sometime after the events of Avengers Endgame and follows Shang-Chi, son of a conqueror, as he battles enemies to protect and avenge all that he lost. The fighting is fantastic: hand-to-hand combat moving a mile a minute with mystical weapons tied in. Right next to Shang-Chi is his best friend Katy, played by Awkwafina. Living up to her reputation, Awkwafina provides much comedy.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduces all-new characters, making it great for those who are unfamiliar with the Marvel franchise. The film still stays true to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) rules with small references to past films and TV shows.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now the second movie in the fourth phase of Marvel’s release plan, the first being Black Widow, and so far the best.
I had high hopes for Black Widow and was somewhat let down when I left the theater. I walked away from that film thinking that it didn’t feel like a Marvel movie. I was not going to make the same mistake with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, so I entered with much lower expectations. I was pleasantly surprised when Shang-Chi felt like a Marvel movie, with mystical characters and enticing story lines.
It was also great to see an Asian superhero surrounded by a predominantly Asian cast. Many scenes in the movie were entirely in Mandarin.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was also an excellent way for Marvel to expand their films’ representation — Shang-Chi is the first Asian hero to star in a Marvel film. It was also great to see an Asian superhero surrounded by a predominantly Asian cast. Many scenes in the movie were entirely in Mandarin.
While most of the acting was what you would expect from a Marvel movie, Tony Leung (playing Shang-Chi’s father) went above and beyond. Leung makes the audience understand his character’s layers just through his performance.
As of now, the only way to watch Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters. Unlike other movies recently produced by Disney, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will not arrive on Disney+ any time soon. For the previous Marvel movie, Black Widow, Disney+ subscribers had the option of adding a thirty-dollar extra fee to watch the film on the site instead of in theaters. It seems that this model has been scrapped and movies are going back onto the big screen.Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was absolutely fantastic. Marvel fans and action movie fans alike will adore this movie. From the great storytelling to the funny characters to the special effects to the spectacular action sequences, this movie is a must watch.
