At the end of each year, Spotify’s 574 million users anticipate their Spotify Wrapped, a feature of the music streaming service that reveals each user’s listening habits of the past year. This becomes a large talking point on social media every December, as users post their own Wrapped summaries.
The feature reveals the top five genres, artists, and songs of each user, along with the number of minutes of music they listened to in that year. It also shows other unique features such as whether the user was in the top 1% of listeners of their favorite artists, or what city their music taste most resembles.
This year’s top artist was Taylor Swift, with 26.1 billion global streams, which didn’t come as a surprise to most considering her monumental year. Following Swift were Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, Drake, and Peso Pluma, in that order. This year’s top song was “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, with 1.6 billion global streams, followed by SZA’s “Kill Bill,” Harry Styles’ “As It Was,” JungKook’s “Seven (feat. Latto),” and Eslabon Armado & Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baile Sola.”
In terms of albums, the top spot went to Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti, which garnered 4.5 billion streams globally. Following that were Taylor Swift’s Midnights, SZA’s SOS, The Weeknd’s Starboy, and KAROL G’s MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO.
Spotify stated in their official 2023 Wrapped Article that, based on trends, this year was seemingly “defined by the return of major female pop stars, sonic diversity that topped the charts, and a global music atmosphere that gave rise to powerful genres.”
So, what’s in store next year? Well, only time will tell.
