“A New Era of Orange.” For Philadelphia Flyers fans, these five words have been words of hope. These five words have been words of change, an opportunity to start fresh. The “New Era of Orange” was the slogan implemented after the conclusion of the 2022-23 NHL regular season by organization executives who understood that the mediocrity of the past few years would no longer be acceptable. GM Chuck Fletcher was fired, with Flyers legend Danny Briere succeeding him and Keith Jones, former Flyer, filling in as President of Hockey Operations.
Briere got his GM career off to a hot start, trading defensemen Ivan Provorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. He elaborated upon this decision, stating that “We have a chance to really kind of start building the team the way we want it, the right way that we’ve talked about…It kind of starts with that.” He proceeded to make a flurry of moves in an attempt to undo the atrocities left by his predecessor, inciting a traditional, official rebuild. The plan was to build through the draft, bolster the team morale, and add talent over time.
The result? A team of motivated men willing to sacrifice for their team. In under a year – two years under the projected timetable – Jones, Brierre, and Head Coach John Tortarella have fostered the 14th ranked NHL team. After a bottom five finish the year prior in which effort and morale levels were cited as “problematic,” and “toxic,” the Flyers squad of this year have played as a team, and depended on each other late in the game. It is apparent through play and interviews that the organization leans upon each other, as well as their dedicated fans.
The City of Brotherly Love can be an electrifying city to represent in times of success, and a demoralizing city to represent in times of struggle. However, the New Era of Orange has been all as promised. Brierre, Jones, and Tortarella have not disappointed eager fans, and in return, have been rewarded with immense support and loyalty. The future of the Flyers team is brighter now than ever before. The team has embodied brotherhood in a manner that should be strived for by all.
