Fords Crew leans on Fifth Formers

The crew team historically has performed exceptionally throughout both the fall and spring seasons. The team has raced in many prestigious competitions, such as the Head of the Charles, Stotesbury Cup Regatta, and SRAA Nationals.

However, this year, things may be a little different. Due to the team only having three Sixth Formers, many underclassmen are faced with a bigger role.

“It is hard with basically no seniors, but we do have a lot of juniors who have been stepping up into leadership roles,” Sixth Form captain Henry Biddison said.

Following an extremely tough fall season, where both the Varsity 4+ (Coxed Four boat) and 4x (Quadruple Scull boat) barely qualified for Head of the Charles, the team looks to recollect and rebuild themselves for the spring.

“If we focus on it, I can see us winning a lot of races with our group of guys.”

“We had a really good winter of getting dedicated guys into shape, and I think that will only help our odds in the spring,” Fifth Form captain Andrew Walker said. “Now we just need to keep working hard, and guys need to realize where they can be leaders for the team.”

The start of the spring season brings the promise of warm weather, but on the horizon also looms faster and more experienced competition. Many top teams contain Division-I recruits, posing a large challenge to the younger team. The team captains still believe in obtaining successful results. They all echo the same thing: a focus on technique.

“If we focus on it, I can see us winning a lot of races with our group of guys,” Biddison said.

A boat of rowers who pull together with good technique has the potential to beat not technically sound rowers who pull more watts.

Walker believes if the team can continue to work together, following the leadership and examples set by the captains, they can “achieve a greater sense of team respect and success that will really show and energize the team in future years.”
