Haverford students win Scholastic Art Awards

The Scholastic Art Award competition, which features student photography, illustration, film, animation, and drawing, is one of the most prestigious art competitions in the country. This year, seven talented students earned regional recognition at the competition.

Leading the way was Fourth Former Atticus Walvoord, who won a Gold Key in Photography, the competition’s highest regional honor. Woolvard commented on the inspiration behind his winning piece, a photograph of a lily pad.

“I felt that the lily pad was almost a diamond in the rough, where everything around it was chaotic, and it was just chilling, living life.”

Woolvard said, “I felt that the lily pad was almost a diamond in the rough, where everything around it was chaotic, and it was just chilling, living life.”

The process of editing a photograph is not easy.

“The most challenging part of this piece was the editing of the photograph, as the raw file was terrible compared to the finished piece,” Walvoord said.

Winning also motivated him to keep pursuing photography.

“I never really thought that I had a chance at winning it. It wasn’t like I took the picture and instantly knew that it was a winner. But once I saw people appreciating my work, it pushed me to really try my hardest for every art project throughout the rest of the year.”

Also honored were Sixth Former Desmond Heneks and Fourth Former Aaron Ince, who earned Silver Keys in Photography and Illustration, respectively. Sixth Formers Riyadh Rolls and Lamar Duvernay, Fifth Former Jack Maloney, and Fourth Former Duke Durant each received Honorable Mentions in Portfolio Photography, Film & Animation, Drawing, and Photography, respectively.
