Rowers finding their rhythm

Haverford crew’s 2nd varsity boat after receiving their 1st place medals at city championships – Jesse Kanefsky ‘29

The crew team has a long history of winning championship regattas, triumphing in over 100 throughout its history. Despite a hard start to the season, where many boats were struggling to find a rhythm, the team has found greater successes recently.

The team placed on the podium in three separate events, in the Freshmen Quad, lightweight 4, and varsity 4.  At the Manny Flick 5 competition, three boats won, including the Varsity Four, Junior Varsity Four, and Second Varsity Four. On top of that, a few other boats did very well, either placing on the podium or right behind it.

To qualify for Nationals this year, a boat needs to place in the top three at City Championships. The coveted race took place on May 2nd and 3rd, with time trials on Saturday and finals on Sunday. Our school race this weekend at citys, getting four golds, one silver, and two bronzes. The varsity four is bringing home a trophy permanently for winning three years in a row. The team has been preparing for this race for two weeks, practicing every day since the Manny Flick 5 competition.

With strong momentum and growing confidence, the team is beginning to peak at the right time.

After City Championships, the team has two weeks to prepare for the monumental Stotesbury Cup Regatta. As the largest high school rowing race in the U.S., held every spring on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, it features top crews from across the country.

Three championship regattas, within this short amount of time, will be nothing short of extraordinary; however, it also provides the school a major opportunity to prove its worth. With strong momentum and growing confidence, the team is beginning to peak at the right time. Each practice has become more focused and competitive, as rowers push each other to improve and secure their lineups. If the team continues this level of intensity and execution, they will be in a strong position to succeed at the City’s and carry that speed into the rest of the championship season.
