Two-credit arts requirement is too much

Poll – Arts requirement

When middle school students enter the upper school, they are asked to join a theater, visual arts, or music class. While these classes may serve as a break from the academic rigor of the upper school, it becomes a burden, as Haverford requires two full arts credits for graduation.

While many students opt to take at least two art classes or participate in another arts credit, the arts credits are nonetheless unnecessary.

In my case, I chose to take two languages instead of taking an art class, as the arts were never very interesting to me, and I would rather take another academic course.

However, this leaves my two arts credits to be fulfilled during my Fifth and Sixth Form years, which is especially important because these are the years of high school where electives are more diverse and align with my academic interests.

Another difficulty with achieving arts credits in my case is that I participate in sports and robotics, which conflict with the theater production, the jazz ensemble, and the Notables.

Part of the reason why the school makes arts credits mandatory is that they believe it will help students become more creative and express themselves.

However, art classes feel like a waste of time because that slot could be used for a class that aligns with my future.

If the school were to remove the arts-credit requirement for graduation, most students would still choose to take art classes, and there would still be plenty of active participation in ensembles and the musical. This change would allow students to take more classes that they are truly passionate about.

Giving students more choice in the classes that they take would allow them to make the most of their time at Haverford.
