Letter from the student body president

Wayne Gretzky: the undisputed greatest hockey player in the history of the universe.

Every sport has its G.O.A.T. debate: Brady or Mahomes, Jordan or Lavar, Tiger or Nicklaus. But in hockey, everyone knows that it’s number 99. Alex Ovechkin recently passed him in all-time goals, but still no one doubts Gretzky’s status.

Why? Because Gretzky was an assist guy. He was a passer first. Every time he stepped on the ice, he was looking not to score but to dish the puck to his teammate so that they could.

The only undisputed champion of their sport wasn’t looking for personal glory, wasn’t looking to do it all himself; he was looking to bring the people around him up.

The way Gretzky acted on the rink is the exact way we as Haverford boys must act. Always focusing on the success of the classmates around us, always focusing on what we can do for others rather than what we can do for ourselves, always celebrating their success like our own—these are the keys to being united as a school.

With that mentality, not only will those you helped perform better and achieve their goals, but you will also become the best version of yourself, just like Gretzky did.

Looking past your own desires can be a challenge. But it’s not impossible. Each time you catch yourself being jealous, ask why someone else’s success makes you upset. Each time you think about doing something that would put someone else down for your own benefit, think about how you would feel if the roles were reversed.

Being the G.O.A.T. isn’t easy, but it’s something that everyone should strive for.
