Is a forty-five-minute lunch period really long enough?
Students have much that they need to do in this short amount of time. They have to eat, socialize, and do academic work. Furthermore, most students don’t even get the full amount of time during the lunch period.
First off, students have to walk to the dining hall. While this isn’t always a problem, some classrooms, like Dr. Griffiths’, are a long walk away. On top of the walking time, lunch lines are long, and waiting can be upwards of ten minutes. While students do have five minutes in between classes and lunch to mitigate the loss of time, it does not fully fix the issue. Some students do not even get the full amount of time. Even if they did, it still would be too short.

After students eat their food, they are left with around twenty-five minutes, maybe even less. This does not leave that much time to talk to each other, along with walking back to classes. This could prevent some students from building connections they can take outside of the lunchroom.
If we put aside the social connections, we have some other things that could be done during lunch.
“No students would ever complain about a bit of extra time to just relax after eating a large meal.”
“I wish there was a bit more time to study before fourth period,” Fourth Former Eli Goldberg said.
Some teachers assign tests in the last period, so some extra studying time would be appreciated.
The time could also be used to make up certain tests and quizzes, since most can’t be taken in forty-five minutes. Along with tests, it could also be used to do some homework, so you don’t have as much after practice. No students would ever complain about a bit of extra time to just relax after eating a large meal.
Having a bit of a longer lunch would be beneficial for all groups involved.
